Chapter Five

“Elsa, wake up.” Charles’s voice penetrated her mind. Strong arms wrapped around her, pulling her back to reality. Her eyes flew open and darted around wildly. “It was just a dream,” he assured. “You’re safe.”

No, I’m not. I will never be safe and neither will anyone else. The time on the clock read five-thirty. She relaxed, relieved that she didn’t over sleep again. She turned to him and was shocked by his appearance. She frowned, reaching her hand up to brush her fingers over his face. His eyes were bloodshot with dark circles under them. Stress lines were etched in his face. “Didn’t you sleep?” She asked.

He shook his head, pressing his face into her palm. “I was up all night watching you.” His gaze collided with hers and she saw pain flicker in them. “I was afraid if I closed my eyes, you would be gone when I opened them,” he confessed.

Guilt overcame her. Looking down in shame, she began, “Charles, I wasn’t-”

“Anna is awake,” he announced right before a cry sounded.

Elsa sighed, “I’ll be right back.”

“You stay, I will get her.” He slid off the bed and disappeared down the hall. A minute later he returned with Anna. He smiled down at his little girl before handing her to Elsa to be fed. He watched mother and daughter lovingly. “I’m going to get an early start on work,” he stated.

“Charles, we haven’t talked.”

“We will later,” he said rushing out.

She blew out a breath and looked down at Anna. She looked up with green eyes like her father’s, “Now he is avoiding me,” Elsa said. Anna cooed in response, bringing a smile to her mother’s lips.

Elsa approached the kitchen slowly with Anna in her arms. She peeked around the wall, afraid to enter. She straightened her shoulders. She had no choice but to go in and start breakfast before having to get Victor ready for school. Stepping into the room, flashes of the carnage from the night before immediately began to play out. She backed away, clutching her daughter to her chest, her breathing uneven. “Elsa.” She heard her name from behind her.

“Charles, take her.” She turned to hand Anna over, still struggling to breath.

Charles studied her carefully with concern as he took the baby. “What’s wrong?”

“I, um, I need some air.” She glanced down at her hands, remembering them covered in blood. She inhaled sharply and turned away, heading for the door.

“Elsa!” She ignored him and opened the door, needing to get away from the house. She wished she could get away from her own mind. The guilt of taking a life was tormenting her. “Maybe I was never cut out to be a wolf shifter,” she said aloud. Her attackers were right; she was nothing but a half-breed. Her human side seemed to be much stronger than her shifter side. She broke out into a run, in the direction of the woods. She kept moving until a gust of wind blew past her and she collided with something hard.
